Annual tournament 2016
With seven visiting teams together with five of our own we, in conjunction with Inspire Sports, held our second Festival of Walking Football at the Bradley Development Centre.
Our visitors included teams from Boston, Stamford, Hull, Hornsea, Heanor, Cottingham and a special team all the way from Holland, making this a truly international tournament.
Played in a similar format to last year, with tow leagues of six teams meaning each team played five league games.
After the conclusion of the league format there were three knockout competitions, the Trophy, the Shield and the Plate dependent on each teams finishing position.
The final of the Trophy for the top placed teams was between Heanor and one of our teams with Heanor winning through 3-2 on penalties. The Shield was won by another of the Ancient Mariners and the Plate, between Hull Pacemakers and Grimsby Ancient Mariners. After a tense 1-1 draw this also went to penalties. Pete Huxford in goal for the GAM pulled off a penalty save that gave Al Nilsen the opportunity to give us another win. He efficiently took the opportunity by hitting home the decisive kick.
Just goes to show that even not winning a single game, finishing bottom of the league, but to keep going and things came good, taking home the Plate.
Although it is nice to win it is more important that as far as Grimsby Ancient Mariners are concerned everyone , regardless of age, ability or fitness, plays to their full potential and enjoys the game.
Apart from the football the day raised a tremendous amount of money for Prostrate Caner UK, currently approaching £1,500. A massive achievement and thanks must go to Mick Hill whose idea to support this charity and to all those who gave so generously.
Well done to all.
